Robert Hood’s Omega Man soundtrack | FACT magazine: music and art
Robert Hood’s Omega Man soundtrack | FACT magazine: music and art
Detroit techno icon Robert Hood is to release a curious new album this Spring via his own M-Plant label.
FACT can exclusively reveal that the album, entitled Omega, is a new soundtrack to the 1971 sci-fi movie The Omega Man. Directed by Boris Sagal and starring Charlton Heston in the title role, The Omega Man was based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel I Am Legend, which inspired 2007’s Will Smith vehicle of the same name.
In the film, most of humanity has been wiped out as a result of biological warfare between the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union. Heston plays military scientist Colonel Robert Neville. Having rendered himself immune to the killer virus by injecting himself with an experimental vaccine, Neville now leads a life of bitter survivalism, fighting off The Family, a cult of nocturnal albino mutants dedicated to destroying what’s left of technological society. We won’t spoil the rest of the nutty plot , but if you’re curious you can find a full synopsis here.
“The [Omega album] is finished,” Hood, who is best known for pioneering minimal techno with seminal releases like Minimal Nation (1994), tells FACT’s Bjørn Schaeffner. “It’s this long-time vision I’ve had in musically interpreting the movie.
“There was the remake with Will Smith in I am Legend. But I’ve had this vision of doing this project even long before that. You know the story: Charlton Heston plays the last person on Earth, everyone has died. This man is running out of hope, running out of faith. He is this kind of Messiah type figure. The music I’ve done is sort of a loose interpretation of this precept. I just imagined myself if I were commissioned to do this soundtrack. What would it be like? And so, this is what [Omega] is.
But what drew Hood to the project in the first place?
“Faith,” he answers matter-of-factly. “Let’s say, you’re the last man on Earth, and there was this opposing force of people threatening to wipe out the last remnants of humanity and progress. You know, the white people with the hoods and the white faces, I don’t remember their name [The Family]. They were trying to kill the original character, Charlton Heston. He who represented the last of humanity.
“I asked myself: What would I do? How much hope and faith would I have? Faith in God, faith in restoring humanity? Ever since I saw that movie as a child, it has haunted me. [In particular the scene] where Robert Neville the Heston character creates the serum, this antidote for this sickness. He was like this Christ figure and that has resonated with me over the years.”
“We’re heading in the direction of extinction, we’re killing ourselves and each other…This is where we’re headed: Man’s greed and lack for humanity. [The Omega Man] is definitely metaphoric and if we don’t heed the signs, this is were we’ll end up.
“We live in a society where we just consume. We just take. We live to consume, we live to take. We don’t operate on the concept of giving. When we go to raves or to holidays, we see it only as an opportunity to consume, but not to give input. [... ] The consumption of drugs at raves: That creates negative energy. You know, the techno culture is a positive energy, it’s a God-given vision, but we look at it in such a perverse way. We think about the weekend as just a chance to explode and self-destruct instead of going to participate in something that is higher as ourselves.
“We’re walking like zombies through our lives and we really don’t know what abundant life is about! ”
Omega will be preceded by a single release in March. Look out for the full and revealing interview with Robert Hood, coming to the FACT site next month.

About DIPLO:
Born in Mississippi and raised in various regions across the southern United States, Diplo picked up much of the local culture.[4] He attended the University of Central Florida and then moved to Philadelphia to continue his studies at Temple University where he gained notoriety as a DJ. He released his first full-length solo effort, Florida in 2004.
After hearing one of Diplo's songs in 2004, M.I.A. approached Diplo when he was DJing one night at the Fabric Club in London. Regarding their first meeting, M.I.A. said "It had that same homelessness about it. It didn't have a particular genre, which is what people always say to me: Your song doesn't fit anywhere. So I went on a mad mission to find other people like that, because then we could make a home." Diplo adds, "Besides me being a white dude from Florida and her being a Sri Lankan girl in England, everything else was the same: [We were both] film graduates, [listened to] all the same music when we were kids, were going in the same direction right now in music, it was amazing." Coincidentally, Diplo was playing her single "Galang" as she entered the club, which he got from a worker at i-D magazine. The two became romantically involved for some time and collaborated on a mixtape, Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1. They have collaborated on songs since the release, and he toured as a DJ on her 2005 Arular Tour.
Baile Funk (also called "Funk do Rio" or "Funk Carioca") has been of special interest to Diplo. He first encountered the musical genre while DJing at a house party with Hollertronix and has since used the music sampled beats in numerous productions. Diplo is often cited as having played a significant role in bringing the genre from Brazil to the United States. After traveling to Rio de Janeiro and experiencing the music firsthand in 2004, he released a number of baile funk mixes, such as Favela on Blast: Rio Baile Funk 2004 and Favela Strikes Back, which introduced Baile Funk to many listeners in North America. In co-authoring the mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1 with M.I.A, the two included some Baile Funk themes. Diplo additionally produced a documentary on Baile Funk, entitled Favela on Blast, (2009) which he hopes will continue to bring attention to the genre.
Diplo has collaborated with others including fellow Philadelphians Spank Rock, Amanda Blank and Santigold, as well as the French band Justice. In 2006 he started his own label, Mad Decent, signing Brazilian baile funk group Bonde do Role, and Baltimore rapper DJ Blaqstarr. Diplo has also has been involved in social relief projects, and in 200, started the Heaps Decent Project with partners Andrew Levins and Nina Agzarian, following gigs on the Winter 2006 Big Day Out festival tour. M.I.A. supported one project by recording songs with inmates at a juvenile detention centre. Diplo has expressed interest in taking the project to other countries.[citation needed] Diplo is signed to the Ninja Tune imprint Big Dada.
Diplo has released an album as Major Lazer, a collaboration with Switch recorded in Jamaica. The two were introduced after working with M.I.A.. Diplo is also one of 9 artists who participated in thetruth.com’s Remix Project, where he remixed the Sunny Side song "Typo".

Peter Kruder (one half of Kruder & Dorfmeister) previously remixed DJ Hell’s huge ‘Listen To The Hiss’ on Gigolo in 2005. The melodious ‘Visions LTD’ (his first 12” in a long time) is Kruder’s first Gigolo maxi and will be released in March 09. It also features on DJ Hell’s ‘Eleven’ compilation, released in March; Hell’s yearly showcase of the sound of Gigolo. The title track ‘Visions LTD’ is a soundscape of dance floor dreams - soft yet progressive, a track that commands you to dance. ‘Shine’ kicks up the pace, balancing a heavy elasticized bottom end with some deep and dark synth action.
When Peter Kruder plays, everybody listens! As one exact half of Kruder and Dorfmeister, one very impressible third of Voom Voom, and one solid whole as Peace Orchestra, he is universally praised for being responsible for some of the finest electronic music in the last fifteen years. This is a DJ, producer and musician that refuse to look left or right, and certainly will never look back. Peter Kruder is all about forward vision and imagination to what the future may bring. Single minded, exact, and ultra professional in all his work. His DJ sets are legendary and noted for surprises far beyond what is expected of him. We could go on about the past where Peter Kruder has featured or presided, about how cool the K&D ‘Sessions’ and remixes were and still are, about how far and wide he has traveled on this monumental musical journey, an incredible account of the series of events making up this extraordinary person's life. But to some one that lives solely in the now and the future, this would seem out of place, Peter would never really enjoy this anyway.
Starting from its 1996 foundation, Gigolo has provided. The labels’ release history, which boasts almost 250 releases to date, has bought the likes of Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Fischerspooner, Tiga, The Psychonauts, The Presets, Justice and many more to the modern ear.

DJMONI -Interview At The Beat Magazin Bali

OCEANS 27 SUN 1 NOV 3PM
SOS BAR FRI 6 NOV 9PM
http://www.beatmag.com/bali/245/index.html
Moni was born and raised in Cartagena on the Caribbean coast of Colombia; a very musical city with deep African influence due to it being a port city for trade that included slavery during Spanish colonization. While most kids were being introduced to playgrounds or begging for ice cream, Moni’s parents were wishing her a happy ninth birthday with a pair of turntables and encouraging her to collect vinyl. Pretty soon she was making mix tapes and had formed a healthy addiction to music across all genres, forming a taste for the soulful and eclectic. Also with a taste for the academic, Moni went on to study International Relations and while doing so started a radio show playing non-traditional music from around the world. Since then things have only moved onwards and upward.
From studying an International Relations degree to sharing performance space with the likes of Paul McCartney is a rather large leap in an unexpected direction. What were the steps that took you there?
Ha ha ha. Yes, it’s a large leap and as I reminisce, it never ceases to amaze me. When I graduated, I worked for a small independent label and soon after I moved to New York to work in the music industry. I started promoting some live music and DJ events in 1997 and soon after I was DJing my own weekly residency. Since then I’ve released two CDs, one in the States and the other in Japan, and I’ve spun at some of the top venues in NY and around the world, which ultimately led me to Sir Paul McCartney.
Tell us about the albums you have released, what inspired them? Is your writing generally a collaborative effort?
I’ve collaborated on the remixes I’ve released with a couple of friends. My solo music production was used for a theater piece I scored some years back. The 2 CDs I released were mixes of music I compiled from friends and producers I love. One was for The Fader series Suite 903 the other was for the Japanese label Toy’s Factory with support from the magazine Luire.
What have been the major forks in the road for you over the course of your career? Major turning points? Moments of clarity?
About a year ago I began a documentary web series, Friends We Love, with my partner Mike Vargas and we have produced over 60 self-funded short docs, our site and all its content. We’re obviously passionate about this project but looking back it seems like we’re also a bit crazy. Sometimes at the end of a 16 hour day we’d look at each other, shake our heads and shrug our shoulders because we don’t know how we’re getting through it all. We have begun to shift our energy from production 24/7 to building a business model that will ultimately create a sustainable system to implement our vision. Our vision is to create, educate and celebrate the arts and creative spirit through our documentary series, arts and music festivals, artist workshops and conferences. This has been a major turning point for us because through this project we’re able to create what we’d like to see in the world. We’re also able to incorporate all of our passions, interests and the friends we love.
There’s a rather long list of renowned people that you have worked with over the years, who has made the strongest impressions on you?
Sir Paul was genius. The day of the show he called me personally to talk about the music I would be playing that night. It was surreal. None of the artists I’ve opened up for have ever done that. When I arrived for sound check, he took time to come over and speak to me in the most gracious and kind manner. Even though there was a major production happening all around us, he looked me straight in the eye and had a very cordial conversation. This confirmed what I’ve always believed, that WE ALL have time to speak to everyone with respect and kindness, no matter how busy we are.
If you could meet anyone from the past, present or future who would it be and what would you ask them?
There is only one NOW. If I could speak with someone from a dimension not restricted to time as we are I would ask that entity what to expect when this planet finally reaches a critical mass that is more positive than negative.
Been to Bali before? Impressions? What are you looking forward to while you’re here?
I’ve never been to Bali or Indonesia. I am looking forward to playing a great set at my gigs there. I would also like to explore some of the local traditions - music, dancing, stories, cooking. Hopefully meet with a spiritual leader or healer and experience their methodology and practices. I’ve been working really hard so I hope to relax, surf and eat delicious delicacies I’ve never tasted before. I hope to experience nature and the elements, meet beautiful people and see the island through new eyes.
